Candidate for the Board of Directors of Laurel Oak Community Association

In offering as a candidate for the Board of Directors, I believe maintaining the vitality, livability and financial stability of Laurel Oak Community Association are the #1 priorities. As residents of LOCA, we are fortunate to live in an established, mature community which has operated successfully for over 25 years. Our residents have come to expect a level of service and attention that is appropriate for a community of our stature. If I am elected to the Board, these will be my guiding principles.

I currently serve as the Chair of the Finance Working Group for LOCA. With this excellent group, we have devoted considerable effort to supporting Laura in developing the Operating and Reserve Budgets for LOCA for 2025, no small feat. In addition, we have assisted Laura in establishing a comprehensive investing program for the LOCA Reserve Funds which total over $2.8 million. We are currently earning over $100,000 of interest income per year for the benefit of all LOCA Residents. The impact is seen most clearly in the significant reduction of the Reserve Assessment for 2025.
Rita and I have been members of Laurel Oak Country Club since 2004 and have been Residents of Laurel Oak Estates since 2006. We are active participants in many golf and social events at the Club and very much enjoy the lifestyle offered by the Community and the Club. We have been residents of the US since 2007 and proudly became citizens in 2018.

I have previously served as Treasurer on the Board of Gulf & Bay Condominium Association on Siesta Key. Gulf & Bay has 392 units in 6 buildings on 22 acres right on Crescent Beach. A condo association is an order of magnitude more complicated than a homeowner association (HOA), like Laurel Oak, since it both operates and maintains the buildings in addition to the common areas.

Over several years I served in various capacities in the governance of Laurel Oak Country Club, culminating in a three year term on the Board of Governors, including serving as President for 2014 – 2015. Previously I had served on the Finance, Golf and Long Range Planning Committees.

Until retiring in October 2009, I was a Managing Director with RBC Capital Markets, the investment banking arm of the Royal Bank of Canada. In over 25 years as a real estate investment banker in Halifax, Toronto and New York, I advised public and private real estate companies on equity and debt financings and merger and acquisition transactions. I hold a Bachelor of Commerce degree from St. Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia and qualified as a CPA with a predecessor firm of KPMG.
